The purpose of the Order of the Arrow is fourfold:

  • To recognize those Scout campers who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives

  • To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit

  • To promote Scout camping

  • To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others

  • History
The Order of the Arrow (OA) was founded by Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson in 1915 at the Treasure Island Camp of the Philadelphia Council, Boy Scouts of America. It became an official program experiment in 1922 and was approved as part of the Scouting program in 1934.

In 1948 the OA, recognized as the BSA's national brotherhood of honor campers, became an official part of the national camping program of the Boy Scouts of America.

    Membership
The OA has more than 176,000 members located in lodges affiliated with approximately 327 BSA local councils.

    Sections
An Order of the Arrow section consists of lodges within a geographic area of the region. Once every year, representatives of lodges in the section come together for a conclave to share in fellowship, skills, and training. Our section is lead by four youth officers, the Section Chief, Section Vice-Chief of Program, Section Vice-Chief of Training and a Section Secretary. There are also committees that youth chairman run throughout the program year. All youth positions are advised by an adult Section Adviser. All youth officers, chairman and adult advisers contact information can be found on the resources portion of the website.

    CHIEF'S CORNER

    Brothers,

Welcome to the Section Website, I hope this is an effective resource for finding necessary items. Lots of hard work has been put into the pages listed here, so take advantage of them.
As we enter the fall season of the Order's year remember those important tasks that we commit ourselves to. Hundreds of both youth and adults will become Brothers of this great Order. Likewise we current Arrowmen must be willing to recommit of ourselves to those principles that we ascribe to. Numerous fellowships and service projects are on the books, and those are to be a time of celebration, learning and fellowship!
This past August, the National Conservation Leadership Seminar was held at the University of Indiana. There, Arrowmen from across the county were able to collaborate on issues that affect every Lodge, Chapter and Brother in America. The new strategic plan was unveiled and is already making a positive impact on the future of the Order. This plan entitled "Living the Legacy" can be found on the resources page of this website. Through living the legacy, we can grasp the true concept of what Goodman intended when he spoke of servant leadership. It is important that each Lodge develops a long-range plan and communicates that often with the Council, as well as, its Brothers. Out of this conference Arrowmen were able to catch a higher vision and rededicate of themselves to our purpose and intent. Ask your Lodge Chief for more about the new direction the Order is going, and be part of the change.
This coming summer as you well know by now includes ArrowCorps 5. As a Section we will be doing many things to prepare you for the site of your choice. This fall we will offer the invitation to come participate on a Mountain to Sea Trail workday at Doughton State Park in North Wilkesboro, NC. This trail workday will be held on October 13, 2007 and will run all day. The current objective is to offer this day in the fall for the three western lodges (118, 70 and 104). There will be another workday on the Mountain to Sea trail in the spring at a more eastern location for our Brothers in Lodges 117, 296 and 331. The High Adventure Chairman and Adviser have been working to make these days beneficial for you, and help prepare each lodge for the summer of 2008. At Conclave in April there will be an area within OAX dedicated to ArrowCorps 5 and will further the education started at these trail dates.
In closing remember that it is the Sections purpose to serve the Brothers of this great state and produce a more active and healthy Order. If you should have questions regarding any of the above mentioned items please contact your Lodge Chief or myself.

    In Cheerful Service,

    Robert Mason
    Section Chief
